The Dallas air in the late summer of 2014 was thick with heat, but inside a bustling Starbucks coffee shop on Lemmon Ave, a different kind of energy was brewing. Jerome Larez, his mind already turning over ideas for community action, gestured emphatically as he spoke. Across from him, RafiQ Flowers, an artist with a keen eye for unspoken narratives, listened intently, a thoughtful expression on his face.

They'd known each other through the vibrant, yet often fragmented, LGBTQ+ and arts circles in the city. Jerome, a natural organizer with a degree from Texas Tech, felt a persistent pull to bridge gaps, to create something more cohesive and impactful. RafiQ, deeply embedded in the creative pulse of Dallas, saw firsthand the talent and the stories that weren't being given a large enough stage, especially those from marginalized voices within their own communities.

"It's like we have all these incredible artists, these powerful stories," Jerome said, leaning forward, "but they're often in silos. The LGBTQ+ community, other underserved groups... there's so much shared experience, so much potential for solidarity, but we need a stronger platform to bring it all together."

RafiQ nodded, a slow, considered movement. "I see it every day, Jerome. Artists pouring their souls out, creating work that could really move people, challenge perceptions. But where are the consistent spaces for that? Where's the support that says, 'Your voice, your art, it matters profoundly'?" He sketched idly on a napkin, abstract shapes that seemed to search for connection.

That afternoon, their conversation wasn't just a casual chat; it was a convergence of shared passion and a growing sense of urgency. They talked about the power of art not just as decoration, but as a force – a force for dialogue, for healing, for change. They envisioned an organization that wouldn't just showcase art, but would actively use art to unite, to educate, and to advocate.

"Imagine," RafiQ mused, his eyes lighting up, "an organization that truly champions the diverse identities within our communities. One that gives a megaphone to queer artists, to artists of color, to those who've been pushed to the fringes. We could call it... something about art and attitude. A positive, defiant stance."

Jerome grinned. "Arttitude," he said, testing the word. "I like it. It’s bold. It speaks to the spirit of what we want to build."

The coffee grew cold as they brainstormed, their ideas bouncing off each other with increasing excitement. They talked about exhibitions that weren't just shows, but conversations. They envisioned workshops that empowered, performances that resonated, and a network that truly supported artists from the ground up. They knew it wouldn't be easy. Building a non-profit from scratch, especially one with such ambitious goals, would take immense dedication.

But as they left the coffee shop that day, the Texas sun feeling a little less oppressive, a seed had been firmly planted. The shared vision of Jerome Larez and RafiQ Flowers – a vision of art as a catalyst for unity and equality – was no longer just an idea. It was the nascent beat of Arttitude, an organization that would, in the years to come, strive to give voice and visibility to those who deserved to be heard and seen. The journey started not with a grand plan etched in stone, but with a conversation, a shared belief, and the audacious hope that art could indeed change the world, one story, one brushstroke, one performance at a time.
